One way your insurance company may not fully compensate you on your Hurricane Insurance Claim is by failing to pay you the proper amount of money for your roof.  Often times the insurance company may try to replace an asbestos slate or slate roof with a less expensive shingle roof, instead of replacing the roof with materials of like kind and quality.

For example, to replace 21.45 squares of asbestos roofing with slate style fiber cement composite roofing, it would cost approximately $26,146.91.  To replace a 21.45 squares of asbestos roofing with 50 year composite shingle roofing, it would cost approximately $16,630.18, a full 36.40% less than if the roof had been replaced with slate style fiber cement.*

Or, the insurance company may try to get you to patch or repair the roof making it nearly impossible to find a reputable roofer who does not want to do a small patch job.

Or the insurance company may try to pay you to patch a terra cotta tile roof.  Often times the tiles must be completely removed from the roof and reset.

In one recent July 17, 2007 estimate involving Hurricane Katrina roof damage, a reputable licensed roofer estimated the cost of redecking & and providing a new Ludowici tile roof of approximately 41 squares at $97,568.  The same roofer also estimated the cost of redecking and resetting the existing Ludowici tile on the same roof at $59,356.  Typically, a lift test is performed to determine the necessity of replacing or resetting the entire roof due to excessive wind uplift.  Also, the material warranty may no longer be valid on a reset project.
